Job Description:
LEVEL: Grades K-4
LOCATION: Palo Alto, California
Background and Job Specifics
*We are running a 2-week camp at Khan Lab School on Monday through
Thursday over the weeks of July 11 and July 18.
*We are hiring 4 teachers, one for Grade K, one for Grade 1, one
for a Grade 2-3 cohort, and one for a Grade 4-5 cohort.
*We are scheduled to teach from 12:50 to 3:10 each day.
*The hours of work include the 2 hours and 20 minutes of teaching
each day plus about 2.5 hours of prep each day, for the 8 days of
camp. So 5 hours per day.
We teach courses like geology, electricity, culinary science, and
chemistry. They are laboratory intensive. Having all the lab
supplies in order at the beginning of class time is critical.
This also means that every moment, with 15 to 20 kids running
experiments, is organized chaos! The classes are fast paced, - but
we begin each lab by telling a story to the students, and then
inviting the students to finish the story through the experiments
they set up and conduct.
After the students complete the lab, we try to bring everyone back
together to make sense of the observation and findings. What does
it mean? Where can we go from here?
And then we lead off the next lesson with another story.
Job Description
Teach for the 2 hours and 20 minutes each day
Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to start time and set up your
materials
Spend about 2 hours outside of class time each day, reviewing the
curriculum, studying the content, and making modifications if you
like.
More Background!
The ideal we aim for is that fascinating ideas are revealed through
the sequence of stories and labs over the course of summer camp
week. These experiences we create are based specifically on the
lives of and challenges faced by the greatest thinkers, innovators,
scientists, and mathematicians in history: Lavoisier, Darwin,
Mendeleev, Bohr, Pythagoras, Euclid, Newton, Descartes. (Of course,
we make it all age-grade appropriate!)
When you walk in the footsteps of those who marshaled unrivaled
creativity, intellect, and perseverance to solve the most complex
questions in history, you know what it takes to solve the most
complex challenges of the future.
And we bring youngsters right to the moment before new knowledge
was created, then we pull back, and let them completely take over.
With a few key lab supplies that we provide, and whatever logic,
inference, and instinct they bring, students are challenged to make
the same intellectual leaps as the great mathematicians and
scientists.
Here are a few other things we hope you are good at:
You love sharing new ideas with kids and supporting their
intellectual growth and development. You love being in the
classroom and engaging with students as a passionate, patient
instructor.
You are commanding, knowledgeable, and energetic.
You are compelled to help students with their academic, social, and
emotional challenges, and have the skills and experience to keep
your classroom focused on learning and not behavioral
management.
You are highly organized and have reverence for the impact of the
classroom environment on learning.
You are continually seeking to design deeper and more meaningful
experiments for students.
You are a scholar of science and math history, contemplate human
acquisition of knowledge, and connect these processes to the
pedagogy of teaching both science and math.
Required Experience
---
You are highly organized and very timely
Achieved or pursuing a B.S./B.A. or higher in science, math, or
engineering
1+ years experience working with groups of students between 1st and
12th grade, in either conventional or alternative education
formats
Compensation and benefits
$30/hour
