Principal Project Engineer - Energy Storage (Engineer/Scientist III) Job Title:Principal Project Engineer - Energy Storage (Engineer/Scientist III)Location:Palo Alto, CAJob Summary and Description: Provides design and field engineering support to Research Principals, Project Managers and Program Managers. Works directly with EPRI staff and will sustain a high level of interaction with utilities, technology solution providers, subcontractors, and demonstration site personnel (to include military staff at US military bases and electric utility staff at utility distribution and/or substation sites). Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop requirements and project concepts
  • Assist project manager to develop budgets, schedules and contracts
  • Develop and review engineering deliverables and submittals to ensure compliance with project specifications/scope-of-work
  • Manage and guide subcontractor work progress
  • Coordinate the installation, commissioning, and testing of energy storage systems and microgrids, including writing commissioning acceptance tests and test plans
  • Provide oversight of activities at project locations, primarily in U.S. but occasionally internationally (travel required)
  • Comply with all maintenance and safety codes, procedures and initiate actions to correct safety hazards and unsafe conditions
  • Perform test setups, implement configuration changes as needed, and perform field tests to evaluate safety, equipment/plant performance at laboratory, vendor, factory test facilities, field test facilities, pilot plant field sites, and utility, military, and other critical loads within buildings and overall building sites
  • Perform data analyses of test data to determine performance measures of energy storage and microgrid backup power systems
  • May present research results to electric utility and military technical and technical staff and non-technical staff
  • Responsible for the success of individual projects
  • Perform advanced engineering/scientific analysis with minimal direction and supervision. Beginning to demonstrate creativity and ingenuity in providing technical solutions. Works directly with EPRI staff and high interaction with members and industry.
  • Conduct technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team
  • Conduct independent research and begins to manage small, less complex projects
  • Provide technical advice and counsel to other professionals within EPRI.
  • Assist Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.
  • Review progress and evaluates results. Makes changes in methods, design or equipment where necessary.
  • Exercise considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.Education:Bachelor's Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience requiredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:--- 4-5 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.--- Good verbal and written communication skills--- Required some supervision and guidance to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects--- Responsible for the success of individual projects--- Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research--- May participate in multiple projects--- Individual contributor--- May present research results to advisors or technical staff/members--- Starting to develop technical depth in 1-2 areas--- Focus on projects within a programAdditional Job Information: Ideal Candidate:
    • Masters Degree preferred in Electrical Engineering or related technical field
      • 1-2 year's experience in the development of energy storage, microgrid or similar technology deployments
      • --- US Security clearance or willingness to pursue clearance is highly desirable
      • Capability to read, interpret electrical diagrams, engineering drawings, construction plans, specifications, safety and operation and maintenance manuals
      • Knowledge of industry and safety standards
      • Experience with remote monitoring, data logging, and communications systems
      • Experience with Wye and Delta wiring configurations for energy storage and/or microgrid systems
      • Experience with electric utility planning and operations
      • Experience with new technology demonstrations and testing
      • Experience in construction and field experience overseeing or supporting construction, commissioning, and/or maintenance
      • General computer skills with Microsoft programs, including MS Project or similar project management software
      • Safety attitude with job and peers

      • Excellent verbal and written communication
