Job Description:

**Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?**As you join VMware, you will help grow a company that makes meaningful and significant technology solutions and is committed to being a "force for good" in technology. Our mission is to become the trusted foundation for accelerating innovation in an unpredictable world. VMware software is essential for making the applications and devices your family and friends use every day a reality. Which means your work is essential for transforming everywhere.Working with the Network Detection and Research Team, you will join a team of highly experienced engineers and analysts developing the next generation of network security detection capabilities for our VMware products. The team has deep expertise in network security and sees its roots in academic research. We love to follow recent advances and discoveries in the academic community, and try them out thanks to our ability to build upon vast amounts of malicious network interactions. You will have the opportunity to work on a very challenging and intriguing problem: attempting to identify causality in the stream of events and attempt to reconstruct the sequence of facts that led to a given security events. You will work on a component called correlation pipeline, that enables security operators to connect the dots between different security alerts and understand attacks faster and better.**Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?**+ In the first month of employment, you will be expected to get up to speed and understand the architecture of the system you will be expected to extend and improve, as well as getting acquainted with the build pipeline and the coding standards.+ Within 90 days of employment, you will have successfully implemented your first development tasks. This includes extending the correlation pipeline to implement the defined functionality, writing tests to ensure proper coverage of the newly added code, and going through the gerrit-based code review process.+ Within the first year of employment, you will have done significant contributions to the correlation pipeline and will be considered an owner of such part. You will have active involvement in architectural decisions, and in planning development of new features and capabilities.**The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?**+ Development: your main role will consist in helping in the development of a correlation pipeline capable of combining together security events that are likely to be related, effectively allowing customers to "connect the dots" between seemingly unrelated alerts. The development work will involve using a docker-based build pipeline, architecting and extending the python-based codebase, and producing overall a stream-based service to be deployed on top of k8s clusters.+ Threat analysis: a lot of your contributions to the project will have experimental nature.+ You will need to identify interesting correlation ideas (either through experience/ideas or by building upon academic findings), implement them as prototypes, and then study their behavior and results when running on real customer data. You will need to have sufficient knowledge and understanding of network security concepts to understand whether the result "makes sense" and is useful to a security analyst, and drive this continuous refinement work.**What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?**The team is run as closely as possible to a real research team. The structure of the team is flat, and everybody's opinions are always valued equally. We always attempt to leave as much as space as possible to personal growth and to support employees in learning specialised topics (ML, network security tools, ...). The team combines network analysts (actively developing detections) with developers in charge of the maintenance of the detection processing and developers maintaining the IDS engines: this allows a tight loop in the definition of the requirements and improvements for the pipeline. The team composition is truly international, and combines Italians, Finnish, German, British, and UK nationals.**Where is this role located?**Flexible: The role is considered flexible and will be a mix of working from a local VMware office and remote depending on your preferences and the arrangements determined with your future manager. You will be expected to live within a reasonable non-daily commute of the office. What are the benefits and perks of working at VMware? You and your loved ones will be supported with a competitive and comprehensive benefits package. Below are some highlights, or you can view the complete benefits package by visiting www.benefits.vmware.com.+ Employee Stock Purchase Plan+ Medical Coverage, Retirement, and Parental Leave Plans for All Family Types+ Generous Time Off Programs+ 40 hours of paid time to volunteer in your community+ Financial contributions to your ongoing development (conference participation, trainings, course work, etc.)+ Wellness reimbursement and online fitness and wellbeing classesThis job may require the candidate to travel and/or work from a facility that requires full vaccination prior to entry.**Category :** Engineering and Technology**Subcategory:** Software Engineering**Experience:** Business Leadership**Full Time/ Part Time:** Full Time**Posted Date:** 2022-05-15Networking & Security: IT departments are spending more on security than ever before, but the damage caused by data breaches keeps getting worse.
