Sensor Hardware Validation Engineer

Company: Tesla
Location: Palo Alto
Posted on: September 22, 2022

Job Description:

THE ROLEThe Sensing team is responsible for the hardware that embodies the "senses" of Tesla vehicles. Our goal is to reliably give the vehicle as much information about its interior & exterior environments as possible with high accuracy. We are seeking a sensor hardware validation engineer that will be responsible for validating the sensors that support HVAC, Safety, Autopilot, Chassis and other subsystems of the vehicle.
REQUIREMENTS

  • Drive the validation of sensing subsystems through the following:
  • Test specification generation - distill sensor product performance specifications into a series of repeatable tests with clear pass/fail criteria that includes milestones that focus on de-risking product and/or feature deployment and align with the program timeline
  • Collaboration - host cross-functional sensor validation discussions with electrical, software, thermal, and mechanical design teams
  • Architecture definition - translate sensor performance specifications into tester design documents in the form of system block diagrams, schematics, mechanical design and pass/fail criteria
  • Schematic design - use EDA tools to define the electrical components and their connectivity
  • PCB Layout - supervise the generation of board design files through all design phases
  • Prototyping - support early sensor prototype development to de-risk new technologies by providing DFT (design for test) input to the sensor design
  • Automated test execution - Generating scripts to control a combination of standard benchtop lab equipment (such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, etc) and custom hardware to characterize and test prototype & production intent hardware
  • As a sensor hardware validation engineer, one must be able to:
  • Be responsible for overall testing of the sensing system and its features at any point in the product life cycle
  • Serve as the owner of a given sensing test system/setup to address any issues discovered from development through deployment
  • Understand and debug test setup hardware and software interactions
  • Manage priorities and support a host of projects simultaneouslyRESPONSIBILITIES
    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechatronics or related field.
    • Ability to tackle problems and reason using a first principles approach
    • Experience with circuit board design (Altium preferred) involving specification, architecture, design, simulation, prototype, schematic, layout supervision, validation
    • Strong understanding of analog & digital circuits (MOSFETs, op-amps, linear & switching regulators, microcontrollers, digital protocols like SPI & I2C)
    • Exceptional organization and communication skills (both written and verbal)
    • Experience in LabView, MATLAB, Python, C/C++ or equivalent tools for automating test equipment
    • Proficient in data visualization and statistical analysis
    • Understanding of high-volume hardware development process
    • Proficiency with lab equipment (including oscilloscopes, signal generators, power supplies, LCR meters, spectrum analyzers)PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
      • Experience with sensor design & characterization
      • Experience with CAN tools such as Vector CANape
      • Experience with version control tools such as Git, SVN or equivalents
      • Experience in failure analysis, HARAs, and fault trees
      • Familiarity with JIRA or similar task/feature tracking systems
      • Experience with high volume manufacturing
      • Experience with embedded systems
