Brief OverviewThe Occupational Health Nurse promotes health and
safety to all employees by performing independent, responsible and
professional occupational/employee health nursing and consultation
services that include post job offer / pre-employment medical
examinations, disease detection, prevention, and treatment;
evaluating and administering first aid for employees injured on the
job; following up employee illnesses and injuries; conducting
employee health screenings; administering or arranging for
employees to receive vaccinations and Tuberculosis (TB) screening;
planning, instructing, and counseling individuals and groups on
emergency and preventive health care procedures; and promoting a
safe work environment. Cases are referred to the RN Occupational
Health for appropriate medical management as needed. The
Occupational Health Nurse is expected to exercise considerable
initiative with minimal supervision in designing and performing the
nursing aspects of the occupational health program. The
Occupational Health Nurse differs from other professional nursing
roles by its emphasis on providing clinical services directed to
employees, which broadly fall into two key areas: 1) pre-employment
physical examinations / infection control and medical surveillance
(with respect to employees) and 2) Workers' Compensation illness /
injury management.LocationsStanford Health CareWhat you will do
- Collaborates with others in the Occupational Health Department
to determine the health needs of specific individuals or groups.
Collaborates with Infection Control and Environmental Health &
Safety in the management of infection control and medical
surveillance programs.
- Determines normal physical examination findings and refers
abnormal findings to a physician or nurse practitioner for further
assessment, disposition and classification.
- Evaluates, treats, and manages work-related employee illnesses
and injuries requiring first aid; makes referrals to the hospital
emergency department; records such services in the database; and
consultants with the Nurse Practitioner about timing and urgency of
scheduling of employees referred for evaluation and treatment.
- Performs complete pre-employment physical examinations and
takes health history on all new employees.
- Performs periodic physical examinations and partial
examinations as needed for employees to determine their continued
physical ability to perform safely on the job. Makes referrals
based on the results of the physical examination. Provides
counseling and health education for employees based upon the
results of the physical examination.
- Provides infection control clinical services: such as, for
example, tuberculosis screening and coordinates tracking and
monitoring of infection control and medical surveillance programs,
ensuring timely follow-up and updating of databases in
collaboration with support staff.
- Request further testing if indicated by abnormalities found in
physical examinations or history or if indicated based upon
knowledge of physical requirements of the job.
- Works with OHS Providers, the Worker's Comp. Insurance Company,
The Hartford, Risk Management, and Leave Management to ensure all
required Worker's Compensation processes and requirements are
appropriately administered. Includes but not limited to ensuring
uniform understanding and communicating of any work restrictions,
compliance with OSHA reporting requirements, and that Transitional
Return to Work policy and procedures are understood, and
appropriately administered.Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing preferred---Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to independently conduct the nursing component of
physical examinations, including ordering and evaluating test
results and formulating recommendations; identify abnormal health
conditions; instruct and educate individuals and groups.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques of
Occupational/Employee Health Nursing
- 6 months minimum of related outpatient or inpatient RN
experience. Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State
