Brief OverviewThe Staff Medical Laboratory Technician performs
basic and automated diagnostic testing. Calibrates assays as
required by test protocols. Performs quality control and assesses
test reliability prior to reporting patient results. Maintains
supply inventory, by assisting with ordering, stocking and
replenishing on-board, in-use reagents. Performs and documents
routine preventative maintenance. Troubleshoots and reports
instrument malfunctions to licensed staff, senior staff. Enters and
verifies results in the laboratory information system classified as
moderate or waived testing under CLIA, excluding immunohematology
and microscopy. Retrieves and reports results, including critical
values to the appropriate requestor. This position works under the
supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, reports
discrepancies to a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Senior,
Reference, or Supervising Clinical Laboratory
Scientist.LocationsStanford Health CareWhat you will do
- Communicates with physicians, nursing staff and clients
clearly, responding to and documenting inquiries,including specimen
collection requirements, test requirements, and reported test
results, referring issues andquestions to more senior staff as
appropriate. Utilizes hospital resources for communication
including use ofinterpreters.
- Determines suitability of specimen for analysis, following
established procedures and policies. Performs testsand procedures
classified as waived and moderate complexity under CLIA, including
chemistry, coagulation,hematology, immunology, microbiology,
urinalysis, and virology with the supervision of licensed
clinicallaboratory scientist. However, a licensed medical
laboratory technician shall not perform microscopic analysisor
immunohematology procedures.
- Facilitates shift transition with the members of the next
working shift by communicating issues concerninginstruments,
problem patients, quality control, and incomplete tasks.
- May draw patient blood samples following established procedures
if requested as well as accession testrequests into laboratory
information system, with emphasis on accurate data entry, billing,
appropriatedocumentation and the accurate generation of
reports.
- Participates in bench level training for students at all
levels. Allows students to watch as he/she performsbench work.
Teaches basic operating protocols/procedures and criteria for test
validation, reporting andinterpretation.
- Performs routine, regularly scheduled instrument maintenance,
calibration, standardization and adjustment.
- Performs tests in a timely manner maintaining the turn-around
standards for all categories of testing. Whentesting will be
delayed, communicates approximate turn-around-time to appropriate
personnel, includingnursing units, clinics, supervisory staff and
clients.
- Records and reports test results. Reviews results for accuracy
and precision; repeating tests or performingconfirmatory tests as
appropriate and correlating laboratory and patient data to verify
results. Interpretslaboratory results in light of controls and
published standards. Communicates critical results to the
personresponsible for the care of the patient.
- Regularly performs and documents quality control testing as
specified in procedures. Recognizes out-ofcontrolvalues, takes
corrective action or refers out-of-control values to licensed
clinical scientist for action.Informs supervisor immediately of
unresolved quality issues. Records, calculates and plots known
controlvalues from technical instruments to ensure their
reliability and accuracy in reporting results.Education
