ESX is the industry leading compute virtualization platform and is used almost all 500k customers of VMware. Our ESX platform powers most of on-premise data centers and it is estimated that about 70 Million workloads run on our platform. ESX is also the under-pinning for our multi-cloud strategy and is deployed on on public clouds like AWS, Google and Azure, as part of our VMware Cloud deployments.ESX engineering team is proud to have some of the best minds in Virtualization space and our architects have authored the most influential ACM papers on this topic. The team is known for reinventing itself and delivering multiple patented technologies to the world over the last 2 decades. Now, we are reinventing ourselves again and creating an architecture for the next generation datacenter. Here are a few of the exciting projects our team is working on Project Monterey, Democratizing Artificial Intelligence , Unprecedented Scalability .ESX team is currently based in US, Beijing, Bulgaria and India. his engineering leader will have a compelling and established record of success in delivering infrastructure platform software for enterprise and cloud businesses. This leader should have a high-level understanding of the hardware ecosystem (spanning compute, network and storage) including recent trends in compossible and disaggregated hardware. In addition, he/she will have proven leadership experience in an established multi-national company and had led large development teams in India region.The RoleThe Director R&D will be a partner to the VP of R&D for ESXi and help develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy for ESX. He/she will continue to establish a culture of excellence in execution for our business. This person will define realistic targets and milestones; focus the engineering teams; establish a high level of team participation and interaction; serve as an inspiring mentor and coach; ensure that quality is a high priority at every stage; and move products into production in the desired timeframes. This person will work closely with the product management executives and help expand our leadership in the industry.ResponsibilitiesKey duties will include:Directly manage the performance of the engineering team to ensure that the organization is meeting customer needs on time and on quality, contributing positively to the profitability and margin requirements of the business.Develop, lead, and inspire the team. Be a magnet for software development talent and accelerate the hiring of strong architects, developers, test automation and user experience professionals. Solidify succession plans and enhance management capabilities to meet strategic and operating objectives.Possess a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the complexities and needs of running a software development organization such as making technology and architectural trade-offs, competitive analysis, market gap analysis, life-cycle management, etc.Demonstrate energy and passion around making an organization run efficiently. Through the use of metrics/data, drive continuous improvements in engineering productivity and improve the scalability, reliability, quality and performance of our development and delivery systems.Be a respected leader in the company. Establish a strong collaborative culture with peers and other functions within VMware. Promote a culture of success, pride, performance, discipline, and creativity. Be an effective spokesperson and champion for the development teams.Work closely and engage with VMware executives and direct reports to establish an environment that is motivating and entrepreneurial in nature. Work especially closely with Product Management to obtain prompt resolution to key business issues likely to impact product release schedules, product requirements, product quality, and business operations.Qualifications and Experience10-15+ years of progressively broadening enterprise systems software development leadership experience with a strong track record of success in the architecture, development, and delivery of highly complex, enterprise class and/or Cloud software.Has inherent knowledge of development processes and best practices to manage multiple, large scale, and co-dependent software development projects consistently on time and on budget. Demonstrated success in transforming a large-scale engineering organization driving cultural, technology and tooling changes.Proven track record of success leading kernel/platform/systems development teams in a dynamic entrepreneurial environment where management of complex and often conflicting product requirements is a critical driver of success.Experience organizing a product development function for growth in a highly competitive market such as cloud computing where taking advantage of strategic opportunities requires short product life cycles and flexible and adaptable product architectures.Demonstrated track record of implementing enhanced product development processes that shorten release cycles and improve time to market for new products.Proven leadership experience setting the vision and building, leading, and motivating development teams. Trained in software development organizations and leadership from a company known and widely respected for world-class software development processes and practices.Managerial CompetenciesFosters a customer-focused environment.
