Prototype Electronic Systems Engineer The Hardware Research and Technology Laboratory at PARC is a group of multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers who enjoy the opportunity to invent and develop new technologies, foster innovation, and launch new businesses. Research in HRTL includes 3D printing, sensor systems for the IoT, carbon capture technology, applications of artificial intelligence, digital x-ray detection, robotics and much more. We are seeking someone with broad-based skills, including design, development and testing of analog and digital electronics, embedded firmware development, and a desire to prototype and develop new technologies. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and with other team members to drive innovations from the lab to the real world through ideation, design and prototyping of experimental systems. The Sensor Devices and Systems group within HRTL is looking for someone who can work with researchers across PARC to turn concepts into real, working prototype electronic systems. Representative examples of systems include digital X-ray detector readout circuitry, low power wireless sensor nodes, control systems for robotics and/or printers, machine-learning-enabled sensors, autonomous ocean floats, and many others. A successful candidate will be able to start from a general concept and associated technical requirements and finish with a working prototype. This includes designing a system architecture to meet technical requirements, selecting and evaluating components, designing digital and analog electronics and printed circuit board assemblies (modeling, schematic capture, layout, and outsourcing of fabrication), writing required embedded firmware, and testing/debugging the final system. This job will be most satisfying for candidates who enjoy working independently and as part of a team on a wide variety of projects, prototyping new ideas, and seeing their ideas mature to real-world demonstrations Responsibilities: Implementation of experimental hardware systems including digital X-ray detector readout circuitry, low power wireless sensor nodes, sensor measurement systems and other new systems. Design systems architecture and circuit boards for analog and digital electronic systems, including circuit simulation and component selection. Write, test, and debug software and firmware required for implementing functional embedded system prototypes. Implement electronics prototype systems and troubleshoot/debug to address noise, reliability, and other issues. Hands-on lab work for system evaluation, data capture, and analysis. Communication of results to other staff and groups within the lab. Willingness to explore new areas and build new expertise to augment a wide range of efforts in the lab. Qualifications Applicants should have a BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering or science discipline. At least 5 years of industrial experience is preferred. Experience with analog and digital electronics design, PCB and circuit layout, and embedded system programming Experience with programming microcontrollers using C or other embedded programming languages Experience taking an early phase idea through entire process of design, implementation, and testing to yield a functional electronic system prototype. Experience with mechanical design, sensor integration, and/or motor control is a plus. Experience with ARM architecture, RTOS, ROS, wireless communication protocols, and/or Python is a plus. Experience with building and operating experimental laboratory equipment.
