Ford's Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world's first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.

Today, we are exploring and delivering ways to make smarter vehicles and our transportation system more efficient to improve people's lives by helping them move more freely, safely and enjoyably. For example, we are changing how our products are made by creating high-quality vehicles in an environmentally and socially responsible way, including the use sustainable materials. Since 2000, we have used 12 industry and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up of 20 percent sustainable material by 2025.

What you will be able to do

Ford Motor Company is moving into a new phase of its 100+ year history, one in which software is at the heart of our future. The automobile is being redefined as a networked computing platform upon which an ever-evolving set of applications is being crafted, allowing us to build exciting new consumer experiences. We collaborate extensively within Ford and with external partners, thus we also require outstanding communication and collaborative skills.

Are you a passionate software engineer with a demonstrated interest and programming abilities in smart home and IoT platforms? Do you want to work with in-vehicle, cloud and rapid prototyping projects to bring concepts into the real world? Our ideal candidate can participate in design and scoping sessions to help frame business problems into measureable steps and can then develop the software needed. We are seeking a self-starter, comfortable with the continuous self-directed learning nature of an applied research center.

This position is located at Ford's Greenfield Labs facility in Palo Alto, California. Github Profile and/or Portfolio material are appreciated and encouraged with applications. You will:

  • Develop software using new computing architectures in support of Proofs of Concept and research objectives
  • Build libraries and frameworks that support rapid prototyping
  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams across multiple locations to define, design and create innovative user experiences
  • Design and develop offboard, hybrid on-offboard and IoT software applications to enable meaningful customer experiences
  • Create documentation to showcase research and support internal customers
  • Work independently in an ambiguous research environment
  • Build and rollout quick proof of concepts by implementing prototype software on prototype hardware
  • Integrate various offboard and onboard vehicle subsystem and sensor outputs for new functionalities
  • Follow the full design life cycle process (e.g. subsystem requirements specification, design activities, code reviews, creating corresponding artifacts, etc.)
  • Prepare feature specifications and related documentation

The minimum requirements we seek

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field of study
  • 2+ years of experience with software development in C/C++ and/or Python (internship/co-op experience allowed)

Our preferred requirements

  • Master's Degree or PhD in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with object-oriented programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, Java, etc.), concepts and design patterns
  • Understanding of performance and data security
  • Demonstrated interest and programming abilities in smart home and IoT platforms
  • Excellent communication skills and a desire to work with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience in multithreading, microservices and containerization
  • Familiarity with RESTful API development
  • A natural curiosity and desire to understand and contribute to the entire technology stack
  • Evidence of intellectual depth with external publications and/or patents
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools
  • Solid understanding of CAN networks
  • Experience collaborating with Git, Jira, Version control and other tools
